The hotel is named after Major-General Sir Henry Havelock, KCB (5 April 1795 – 29 November 1857), who was a British general particularly associated with India. He was noted for his recapture of Cawnpore from rebels during Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Henry Havelock grew up in England. He joined the armed forces and gained at the age of 20, a post as second lieutenant in the 95th Regiment of Foot, Rifle Brigade. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1821. He developed strong Christian convictions in 1823, and these became the guiding principles of his life.
He served the military overseas with distinction, first in India, and then in Afghanistan, finally serving again in India. During this time he won a reputation as a great military leader. He died of dysentery in India in 1857.
He knew he was to be created a Baronet for the first three battles of the Indian campaign; but he never knew of the major-generalship which was conferred shortly afterwards.
It is unclear why the hotel is named after this General.
