Town Acre 496 was granted to Georg Fife Angas, Henry Kingscote and Thomas Smith, all of London, on 23 December 1837. Johann Matthias Julius Theodor Weil of Hamburg, who arrived aboard the ‘Alfred’ in 1848, purchased this north-east quarter acre on 7 March 1878 and built these two pairs of semi-detached bluestone cottages with distinctive timber framed gables and verandah brackets. The first occupant of this house was William Schapel.
