This terrace of shops and dwellings, on Part Town Acre 452, were erected ca 1900 as a result of the Central Market nearby. Presumably designed by architects William and Good, the building is an unusually fine survivor in a conspicuous location. Capped by an elaborate decorated Classical parapet with pediments and incised decoration, the building contributes to the Victoria Square precinct.
According to the adjacent Information Plaque for the Crown and Sceptre Hotel, the original Crown and Sceptre Hotel stood on this site, until the new hotel was built in 1877.
