1. OLD POLICE STATION
66 Commercial Street

OldPoliceStation

The building that is now the Visitor Information Centre was completed in 1860. It was built to serve three Government agencies: the Courthouse, the Customs Department, and the Police Station.

From the footpath, we descend to the entry, and nearby there is a commemoration plaque. Back of the building are old police cells, and the high walls make escape seem impossible.

Inside there is a display of items from the past, including police uniforms, and bugles and revolvers.

Interestingly, like many other buildings in this area the structure sits on a raft of red gum timbers, embedded in lime concrete.

In the foreground, we see a statue of ‘Justice’ unveiled in 1921. It was erected to honour the pioneers of the Labor movement.
