3. PORT ADMIRAL HOTEL |
||
The Port Admiral Hotel is the oldest building in the Port, dating from 1849. At that time it was called the Railway Hotel, and renamed the Port Admiral Hotel in 1851. Some five years later, a new Railway Hotel was built, further along St Vincent Street. Because the ground level at the Port was raised over the years, the Hotel’s original ground floor now forms part of its basement. The Hotel has been boarded up and out of use since 2006; this was still the situation in 2012. In fact, I found it difficult to find any past pictorial record of this historic Hotel, apart from a sketch in the SA Maritime Museum. The Hotel property once stretched through to nearby Carlton Street where there is an old Coach House which belonged to the Hotel (see Item #5). |
