7. MARITIME MUSEUM
126 Lipson Street

MaritimeMuseum

The buildings housing the Maritime Museum date from 1854 and 1857. They were originally Elders Bond and Free Stores, and were bought by George Ferguson and Sons in 1886. A 1986 Jubilee 150 project restored the building which is presently occupied by the South Australian Maritime Museum.

The building is of solid construction, and the old loading doors and hoists are still evident. An old sign reveals some of the history: the name of Geo Ferguson & Co can just be deciphered.

Entering the Museum, it is initially hard to see past the collection of bowsprit figureheads and full sized sailing ketch. But looking more carefully we find the underlying building structure: a winch in the rafters, old floor boards, and sturdy foundations.
