Corner Gipps and Campbell Streets

The Merrijig Inn is claimed to be Victoria’s oldest hotel. It was built ca 1841, and was at one stage a much larger building with a two storeyed wing along Campbell Street. This was the first meeting place of the Belfast Road Board in 1853, and the Municipal Council in 1856. The Magistrate’s Court and Circuit Courts met here before the Court House was built. After ceasing to operate as a hotel, it was for some time the Police Barracks. (In the 1850s there were eight mounted and six foot constables.)

The building has several cute attic rooms, and a sign displays its unusual name. There is a small settlement so named in the Victorian High Country.
