50. ST PATRICK’S CHURCH |
||
St Patrick’s is the town’s second Roman Catholic Church, the original being a wooden building where the Catholic School and Convent now stand in William Street The nave was built in 1859 at a cost of £3500. The architect, Nathaniel Billing, worked from drawings obtained from English architect Mr Hansom. Note the fine stonework, the unusual stone roof guttering, the gargoyle water spills over each buttress, the typical Hansom octagonal belfry and the walls surrounding the grounds. The interior is lovely, with fine stained glass windows. |
