38. MOTT’S COTTAGE |
||
Mott’s Cottage dates from ca 1850. The original inhabitants of the cottage are not known. The front section of this building, which originally consisted of two rooms, most likely predates 1850. Rate books show that the two-storey rear section constructed of limestone with gabled roof was added by at least 1860. In 1918 the property was purchased by Sarah Mott, the first occupant of that name; she sold the property in 1944. Now owned by the National Trust, the building is also noted on the National Estate Register and Historic Buildings Register. Descendants of William Rutledge donated the glass building housing the sundial some years ago. The National Trust was considering selling the property in 2012. |
