17. LOOKING IN |
||
Directly south of Queenscliff, we come to the impressive Queenscliff Fort. The finished Fort comprised a wall of handmade bricks with firing loopholes provided at intervals throughout its length. A raised mound of earth was built up inside the wall from which defenders could fire on an approaching enemy. The entire perimeter was surrounded by a moat with access gained through two large gates each fronted by a wooden bridge. The moat and bridge are long gone. Peeping above the top of the wall we see an unusual black lighthouse, and a curious tower with a weather vane on top. If we follow around outside the wall towards the sea, we obtain a different view of the black lighthouse. It looks as though a visit to this Fort might be worth while! |
