Near the beginning of the tour we come to an old cannon placed close to the perimeter wall. The sign reads: 32 Pdr Smooth Bore This cannon was part of the armament Moved to the Fort and mounted on a Built by Carron Armaments of Scotland in 1810. Weight 2340 Kg (5159 lbs) Brought into service in 1838. The cannon carries a confirming disk. Across the green stands the old two-storey living quarters. And moving towards the Keep, we see from the plaque that this was built between 1883 and 1885, designed to assist in the Defence from landward attacks. The idea was that the Keep would provide a refuge in case invaders broke through the outer walls. |
