BANK VAULT

The old bank vault is all that remains of this branch of the Bank of Victoria which was established in Walhalla around 1865. The present site was purchased in 1868 and construction commenced soon afterwards.

The building was then destroyed by the major town fire of 1888. The Bank traded from its rebuilt premises up until 1915 when Walhalla’s mines shut down.

The historic plaque gives some back-ground, and includes a (different!) photograph of a gold escort leaving the Bank.
