9. RAILWAY HOTEL |
||
The Railway Hotel was established opposite the then Port Adelaide Railway Station in 1856. The building retains its early Victorian character, and inside there are some panels of stained glass painted by E. Troy in the 1890s – horizontal and vertical. The cellar has a unique history, once used for stabling horses, and with allegations made that a body was buried there. We note that the Port Admiral Hotel on the Black Diamond Corner first held the name ‘Railway Hotel’. Out of interest, Port Dock Railway Station was located almost directly across St Vincent Street from The Railway Hotel. This station was the original terminus of the railway between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, which opened in 1856. The station was closed in 1981, and the interesting building unfortunately demolished. |
