34. CUSTOMS HOUSE AND SHED |
||
Now privately owned, this 1861 stone building was the Custom House in the years when Port Fairy was a significant port of entry into the colony. Customs duties were a major item of Victoria’s revenue. The bell of the S.S. Casino, now surmounting the memorial (#15), once hung in front of this building and was rung to rouse the lifeboat crew on the occasion of a wreck. Behind the Customs House once stood the Immigration Barracks. The Customs House has an unusual and interesting frieze along its verandah. The historic Customs Shed is situated almost directly across the road and park from the Customs House. |
