31. MILLS’ COTTAGE |
||
About 1843 Charle Mills erected a timber hut on this site, incorporated into the present building. John Mills moved into the house, which had been enlarged, and from 1853 to 1871 he served as Harbour Master of Port Fairy. The stone wall in front of the house dates from about 1860 when the level of the street was lowered. If you look very closely between this building and the next. there is a very early stone building set back. The construction history of the building can be viewed from the side, and there is also a plaque at the front. |
