30. BLUESTONE WALL |
||
This block may be the site of the first store in Port Fairy, opened by John Cox in 1839. In 1842 the first religious services were held in that building. (It is known that Cox’s store was roughly near the intersection of Cox and Gipps Streets.) Later, Rutledge and Co. built a number of warehouses – on this site, on the river front, and on the east bank of the river. This bluestone wall is all that remains of the warehouse on this site. The Great Land Sale, held by the syndicate which purchased the remnants of the Atkinson survey from his estate in 1884, was held on this site over two days in 1885. This may have been the spot where in 1887 the ceremony of turning the first sod for the railway line was performed. (The information on the plaque at this site is incorrect.)
