DURHAM CATHEDRAL
ENGLAND
PAUL SCOTT
Durham Cathedral is a fascinating building to explore. With its great age and monastic history it has a cloister and chapter house, and various other external buildings. The Cathedral itself is cruciform in shape, but with an extra ‘transept’ at the Eastern (top) end.
The axis of the Cathedral is geographically east – west with the sanctuary towards the east. This means that our liturgical directions coincide exactly with the geographical directions.
As usual, we begin our tour by circumnavigating the Cathedral (as far as possible), then enter by the Main Entrance.
