HEREFORD CATHEDRAL
HEREFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
PAUL SCOTT
OVERVIEW
This sketch is a Cathedral overview showing the position of the Cathedral and its key components. Hereford Cathedral has an axis which runs due east-west geographically, with the Lady Chapel extension (at the top) at the eastern end. This means that liturgical and geographical directions coincide for this Cathedral. The Cathedral lies south of the city, and can be approached via St John Street or Broad Street. We shall approach along Broad Street, making our first view of the Cathedral the Title View above.
The Cathedral is basically cruciform in shape with a square central tower. A further smaller transept and Lady Chapel extension have been added at the Eastern end. The Cathedral may be entered by the North porch (#5), and also via two smaller entries on the South side: through the Southeast transept (#16), or into the nave from the cafeteria (#6)
The Cathedral is surrounded by very pleasant gardens and lawns, and we shall spend time in the cultivated Chapter House Garden (#8) and the Lady Arbour Cloister Garden (#9).
The cafeteria and gift shop are located at #6, and we particularly note the wing from #7 to #4 which houses the museum, Mappa Mundi, and Chained Library.
In our tour of the exterior of the Cathedral, we shall begin at the Broad Street corner, and circumnavigate the Cathedral in a clockwise direction, finally arriving back at the North porch (#5). We then return to the cafeteria and explore the adjacent wing, before entering the cathedral through the Southeast transept (#16).
I found this a very interesting but quite complex Cathedral.
This is the plan of the Cathedral from a Cathedral publication. Our tour will included these key places, but in a different order. After exploring outside the Cathedral, we shall enter the Southeast transept by the entryway marked by the red arrow, and follow the red path. This rather unorthodox route will lead us to the Lady Chapel and crypt, into the various transepts, and finally through the nave to the choir and sanctuary.
